I did take Hofstadter's Law into account when I started this project, back in late August (!), even though I didn't hear about the law until yesterday. (Isn't that the way it always is with laws?)(I read about it in the book, I Am a Strange Loop
The one thing that I can say about the DP being down for this long: I've gotten a lot of reading done. This is the first real break from the site I've had for three years.
As for when the site will be back up, please see Hofstadter's Law, above. In the mean time, go out and spread good cheer, be grateful that you are alive, and Merry Christmas!

Slow news day...
ReplyDeleteA little reminiscing. This was just over 2 years ago...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akAsYIjCO0Q
I've never been a fan of 'shortened' url's and now I find this article. I like to know where the url is taking me by looking at the address before I click anything.
ReplyDelete-----
Scores of Twitter posts, related to World of Warcraft, Naruto, Beyonce, and Ron Paul, were discovered earlier this week, and in each case the shortened URL used in the tweets pointed to Malware or Rogue anti-Virus installations.
Researcher Andrew Brandt of Webroot explained the drive-by attack, which started when another researcher looking for Ron Paul related news, perhaps plans for a 2012 bid, discovered a clever little campaign spoiling search results using Twitter.

Shortened url update:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.thetechherald.com/
Just go there and click the article "Account compromises on Twitter suspected in recent Malware rush"
Blogger cut off the other half of the earlier posted url.
NORTHSTAR --
ReplyDeleteThat was reported by me yesterday. Read the blogpost from yesterday and you will see the link. I work for a security company and I found the malware late last week. My company published a blog regarding the topic and even put a pic of mine up. Check it out here:

Use LongURL Mobile Expander add-on for FireFox to reveal the real link before clicking on the shortened link. Works great.

ReplyDeleteHi Adam, I didn't see your post, sorry about that. Anyhow, it's still prudent to make sure people are aware of it and if a second post like mine helps, then that's a good thing. Normally in DP, if I was told of a duplicate thread or if I found it by accident, I would have deleted mine right away and bumped the other one.
ReplyDeleteNORTHSTAR -- I wasn't complaining about the duplication here. I was more proud that our blog had been picked up by thetechherald.com and that you had found it before me :-)
ReplyDeleteIt's real interesting to me that you brought up Hofsadter's book, "I am a Strange Loop." I was taking a psychology class about 6 months ago. I started getting real interested in the philosophy of consciousness.
ReplyDeleteThen I went to a Borders book store shortly after and saw the book, "I am a Strange Loop." I wasn't ready to buy it, so I just put it on my Wishlist on Amazon.com so I wouldn't forget that I wanted that book.
I have forgot about it since and was just not reminded when I read your blog post...
I think a voice is telling me to get the book...
Hey guys:
ReplyDeletethanks for the information. My son downloaded one of the antivirus virus's onto my computer from a link he clicked on in Facebook. Cost me over $300 to fix.
So, I installed Norton (the antiviral software I had was lousy) and I have done these two things recommended here!
Healthnut,
ReplyDeleteNorton is a very annoying program and it will want you to pay for updates. I use Avast, it is free to download and automatically updates http://download.cnet.com/1770-20_4-0.html?query=avast%21&tag=srch%3Ba&searchtype=downloads&filterName=platform%3DWindows&filter=platform%3DWindows
Hey, just some news. I'm sure most people have seen the Schiff video about Iran...and I know some were upset but he posted a message on twitter: it can be found on www.twitter.com/peterschiff it's about the fourth or fifth post from the top.

ReplyDeleteI haven't read "I am a Strange Loop", but Hofsadter's "Godel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid" is a fantastic book. Highly recommended. -Brit4RonPaul.
ReplyDeletephilosophy of consciousness
ReplyDeleteLiterally "a wisdom love of consciousness" or "(love of wistom) of consciousness. I wonder what that could mean.
Nothing needs to be transcended, no philosophy held in order to discover one is conscious. One is aware of much, is one aware that one is a self: indivisible and individual? One could say that one transcends one's own ignorance at least in regards to self-certain awareness.
One philosopher averred that it was easier to convince people that they were a piece of lava on the moon, that to help them realize the reality of their own certainty of self.
So we read that Peter was told three times by Jesus, "If you love me feed my sheep!"
Thanks Xrathie, great video. Man there is a lot going on, I miss hearing the DP take on everything. soon...

This is horrid news!! http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20091224/ap_on_bi_ge/us_health_care_overhaul
ReplyDeleteHey Mr.P- I followed that Schiff post, in the video Peter doesn't say one word about Iran...but there are some comments about it below the video. Do you know of a video where he says he does not think its ok to bomb Iran? I'd love to seee it.
ReplyDeleteThanks- pil45
South austin, I know the youtube video doesn't say anything in regards to Iran but I believe Peter Schiff is the one speaking in his twitter posts. I have been emailing his campaign and am about to listen to Wall Street Unspun right now to see if anyone asks him about foreign policy. In one of his latest vlog posts on the Schiff Report he mentions his issues page is up and running and will be updated with more issues than just economics and health care in the near future.

D4L - Thanks for your post about Norton. I will stick with it until it expires. So far it has been good to me. But I am saving your link, for sure!
ReplyDeleteI am just sick about the health care bill. Life as we know it will change forever with this insanity!
much love and missing DP !!!! Merry Christmas - me on Facebook - yuck, i know! http://www.facebook.com/aaron.r.jones?ref=profile

News about the healthcare bill just depresses me. Today on the radio I am hearing what I thought was old news, that the mandate to purchase health insurance is unconstitutional. Folks are bringing up Supreme Oourt cases I heard (and blogged) about a month ago...damn, it's a long shot if we have to fight this in the Supreme Court, because the Obama administration also has the cases ready to *defend* this legislation. If the Supreme Court is the last battleground, the only real hope we have now is to make sure Obama is a one term President so he doesn't have a chance to pack the court with liberal judges.
ReplyDeleteHealthnut4freedom, I agree, this bill literally makes me sick...and thanks to Obamacare, we won't get adequate treatment for our illness either!
Ok, well I just had to fire off to Reid, Boxer, and my own 2 democratic senators about my feelings on this. I don't expect it will do much good, but at least I let my discontent/anger be known. Essentially said that if they know what is good for them they won't pass it. heheh Oh well..guess we can only pray now.. :-(

Glad I could be of help! :-)

Michael, I hope you're not having too much trouble with the database fix and site upgrade. I'm sure there are many who have already offered to help. If you get in a jam feel free to reach out to me as well. I've been publishing websites since the 90s and have quite a bit of experience in this area. My DP username is john2k
ReplyDeleteBy the way, I have a suggestion that you might want to consider... something that might help boost your site income. Split the 'site offline' page making one side the DP downtime message and on the other side put up a list of recommended books from amazon or something like that. Maybe even include a link for DP donations as well.
Has there ever been a moneybomb for Daily Paul? With all these internet and computer programming savvy Ron Paul supporters, I wonder why Daily Paul doesn't have a money bomb tracker that is found on Rand Paul, Peter Schiff, Campaign for Liberty, or Young American for Liberty website. How much would is cost to get a layout similar to the Campaign for Liberty site?

The layout of C4L's site isn't complicated at all and most of it's features could be met by free cms themes with a bit of customization. If you were paying someone to design it, integrate and set up everything... $300-1500 ...All depending upon the quality vs. price the designer offers.
Michael,it appears that you ended up with a nice vacation out of it after all! You probably could have used it anyways!Enjoy !

I hope none of you lose your debate skills while DP is down, smile.
ReplyDeleteI'm harrassing liberal sites -- it's more fun because they don't pull there punches; however, now that Obama is no longer sounding like the candidate they voted for there is a huge rift. This is our opportunity to say "I told you so," hahahaha - kidding. It's a great time to shift their perspective.

ReplyDeleteRon said: "I see all the phone calls, faxes & emails worked to convince the Senate to pass the Health-care reform bill. GET it thru your thick skulls... they care less what you think."
ReplyDeleteThis is a great point. The only thing that Senators and Congressman care about is MONEY and getting RE-ELECTED. They obviously don't seem to think that the liberty movement is strong enough to raise more money than their special interest groups or stop them from getting re-elected. Our focus needs to be more fundraising and winning elecitons. Which is pretty much what we have been doing. However, our focus has been mainly on Rand Paul and Peter Schiff.
We need to get more aggressive with our liberty candidates running for Congress since those elections are relatively cheap and easier to win.
This is the only way politicians will start taking the liberty movement seriously. Otherwise, our words just fall on deaf ears.
is bj lawson running again?
ReplyDeleteMerry Christmas everyone.
ReplyDeleteI'm missing my DP
Merry Christmas to one and all :-)

Nice NorthStar. It works!
ReplyDeleteMerry Christmas to all on the DP Backup.
ReplyDeleteI want the real DP to return.
Too much is happening out there.
Peace to all.
But wait, what if we can help politicians understand that liberty is serious?
ReplyDeleteI might tell them not to tax my neighbor in order to give me some benefit! Leave my neighbors free, they are my friends.
I may ask them not to tempt my neighbor with favorites even if in trade for favorites for themselves. The more perfect union which we asked you to steward depends on your even handedness in dealing with the public’s trust.
I will ask that each be free to deal with each on their own terms. Let none interfere unless one suffers coercion or deception. Individuals may show favorites, while stewards and representatives in their public roles may not.
Is there anything more democratic than a free and open market? We exchange goods and services we have for those we deem better in some way. Restraining coercions and revealing deceptions is fair and just in regards to negotiating the exchange. The answer to the question of democracy in a region is the liberty of buyers and sellers in their exchanges of goods and services.
There is for those challenged beyond mere goods and services the free market of ideas
i'm missing the DP too. it seems like forever.
ReplyDeletehow about an update michael?
Merry Christmas!!!!
